I have a second grader and the second grader making the 911 call has hit me so hard this week. I’m in the local Moms Demand Action chapter but it is hard to feel like we are accomplishing much.

Can someone ElI5… if most Wisconsin citizens support the common sense gun legislation outlined here, how come the Republicans are blocking it? I know about the gun lobby but this just seems wild that there’s such strong support (practically unanimous all things considered) and they’re ignoring it.

They have had such a wide/safe majority for the last decade+ that they haven't needed to do what the voters want. They're doing what the GOP agenda pushes. Since we now have fair maps, the legislative body is more even (although they still have a majority) but in theory, that should make them more prone to actual discussions and compromise. The only thing that will drive them take action outside of their typical party line is the threat of getting voted out, which wasn't really that big of a deal...until now.

Because they're not actually interested in the will of the people -- and feel no fear that they will be voted out on this issue. It's the same all over the country. The vast majority of us support reforms, but nothing happens.

They obviously care about other issues (and about their identity as Republicans) more than they care about gun violence. Do you know any Republican voters? I'm in Wisconsin, but this isn't a Wisconsin issue. It's happening everywhere and on every issue. People objectively don't like Republican policy issues, but their Republican identity is too important to them. God forbid they vote Democrat and become "woke."
