I was raised evangelical and am surrounded by the culture now and if you want to understand what is going on on the right, look at complementarianism. It helps explain why so many women are complicit in ceding their rights, and why men feel entitled to power (obviously it’s more complicated than just that). This book sounds like a great read!
Not a movie, but something that brought me moments of joy and peace recently was rewatching the Full House series with my 10 year old daughter. We finished it and she’s always saying how much she misses it 🥹
Wanted to say thank you for the "Make Your Life Better" and "Things that will make you smile" sections of this newsletter also. The balance between being informed and remaining a functional human. Also, the prompt to call my reps. I call it the worst 5 minutes of my day, but it literally takes only 5 minutes and their job is to listen to me (I remind myself).
Sad times, but also lovely ones as I'll be rewatching some Val Kilmer movies this weekend. Tombstone and The Saint at the top of the list. <3
LOVE that house tour...our house was painted badly a while ago so to reset I had the whole thing painted white and now I'm ready to move back in the direction of more color!!
I felt so energized by today’s Hands Off March. Lots of people honked as they drove past us standing in front of a local grocery store. I bet Jesus would have been there too, standing up to injustice.
I have a Christian fundamentalist friend who is raising 3 white boys, a while girl, and a fifth child TBD. Hearing how she speaks and thinks about gender roles, namely how she and her husband have set up their household and decision-making, makes me scared and sad at the same time for her kids and for everyone they will inevitably hurt if they cannot escape the brainwashing of their parents and community. I look forward to reading this book in the hopes that it gives me some sort of strategy to help speak to these children in a way they will really hear, if not now, then later.
Oh, boy are there a few of these young men in my classroom. And I have some close friends with very feminist husbands who have still noted some of their teenage sons are very conservative and sure have opinions that scare their moms (and others).
I am a public school teacher (AP US History and Psychology) so I have been in freak out mode since his first term. And wow is hard to not have a wild look on my face when I am teaching things like covering Smoot Hawley last week. Things that are helping are both weird or dystopian things like Severance and Paley Fest panel for Handmaid's Tale to silly, brainless stuff like High Potential and Doctor Oddesey. I am really work towards a level of calm where I can watch a a whole movie without multitasking. Your tech detox and focus on your health is a good model for me.

Also, I’m so happy to see a colorful home tour where the home is *actually* colorful 🥲

I just finished a book called Jesus and John Wayne that was about the history of white evangelicals and politics and it was fascinating.
I've had this sitting my bookshelf for some time - thanks for the reminder to pick up!

Highly recommend Tim Alberta if anyone is interested in more analysis on the evangelical/conservative connection. 🙌🏻

I love that The Retirement House got a shout out. They're so fun. In that same vein with childhood nostalgia, I've been rewatching Golden Girls.

This was the lifestyle I was taught to accept as “normal” and “right” but rejected for myself, so I hate seeing it morphing into a larger influence.
