The number of times I have almost hit buy on 25 lb bags of rice and beans in the last couple weeks! But I have NOWHERE to put them so haven’t followed through, yet.

I hate this for us so much! 2 dolls instead of 30 is a 93% reduction in dolls for fucks sake!!

I’m trying not to allow myself to spiral, but I am picking up a few extra cans of food each time I go to the grocery store, and increasing the variety bc I typically only use a few canned things regularly. Extra dried beans and rice, a few more toiletries, OTC meds. Nothing major - no stockpiling, no panic buying, but increasing our baseline a bit.

OTC meds is a good point. Uh, I should check if the meds I need to take every 6 hours to stay alive are made in china.

Even if the meds aren't, a lot of the packaging is made in China!

Isn’t that the truth. I’ve been wonder about my meds too. Lifesaving!!

Yes! (I’ve also heard India produces a lot and has a high tariff.) And any Rx mess that can be given with more per pharmacy pick up is a good idea (90 days instead of 30) if you’re able.

I need to start thinking about "having what we need on hand", is what I am calling it so I don't completely come undone. I dated a guy for a very long time that was on the Libertarian ---> MAGA track and thankfully I got out before it got very ugly but prepping was a big thing for him and it is so triggering.

I don’t have much room to stock up in my small house and am triggered by prepping after having grown up in a religion that prioritized it. I was gifted a wheat grinder for my bridal shower by my mother in law and used to have 25 gallon buckets of wheat and such in the pantry. It was healing to get rid of it years ago and I still don’t think it’s necessary. Stocking up on a reasonable amount of dried and canned goods is sufficient for most situations except in the event of full on apocalypse—and I don’t believe it’s healthy to be living in fear of that.

I’m working on not spiraling. Gina Luker has a really good “common sense” prep list (theshabbycreekcottage on Insta). I’d say the number one thing we’ve done to alleviate worries is that we bought a bidet attachment for our toilet from Tushy. And I stocked up on our Ispring filters for our reverse osmosis water system (I have a health condition where I have to drink tons of water- a gallon a day- and I’m very particular about how it tastes). However, I already run a year round vegetable garden. If you can’t/don’t do that, I recommend finding a local farmer’s market/worker owned coop NOW. I’m expecting quality of goods to go downhill, and if you can’t find local producers in your area, you won’t have to worry about that as much AND you can support local farmers and growers- who are being hit hard by Trump. FYI: almost every market takes SNAP benefits now. If you are in the OKC metro, check out Flora Bodega- black owned, woman owned co-op; sells everything from local (pasteurized) dairy to veggies to art to meat.

Thank you for the name & where to find the prep list!

I think the biggest action I'm taking towards a recession right now is *not* looking for a new job. I feel more secure working in higher ed than trying to jump ship to someplace else and being last in the door when things get rough.

My partner increased our normal cat food order to 3 cases instead of 2, so we're building up a small backlog in case we need it - during the pandemic getting it got a little tough sometimes.

I should probably take this opportunity to really organize our pantry and see what we have enough of, and what we could use a back up of. We don't keep a ton of dried stuff on hand, but it's a good time to start.

Omg, I hadn't even thought about pet food! And my cats have to have a very specific type and brand. Thanks for the reminder!

I too am trying not to panic about tariffs, but I'm inwardly so relieved that my husband and I bought our car last year and aren't having to try to buy one this year. I have been thinking about going to Costco to stock up on a few things.

Thanks for this article, Emily! One note -- I would suggest not linking to Half Baked Harvest recipes. She's problematic for a variety of reasons (there's an entire subreddit dedicated to her because of it, haha).

We’ve been honing our mending and repair skills and keeping our ears to the ground. Also, observing the current moment knowing I’ll feel nostalgia for it in the future—especially as things progress.

Re: possible recession. I don’t really know what to do to prepare for this. I was going to try and find a new rental to live in this summer (need an upgrade!) but is that the wrong move? Is it the right move? I just don’t even know what to do, and of course no one knows for certain what is going to happen. If anyone has any insight into anything regarding prepping and responsible spending I am all ears.

Hi Brandi, I’ve wondered if my rent is going to be increased this summer.

As for a new place, I think I might start online research for rentals that would fit your needs & make a few notes Then as mid then late May, June comes, you can compare prices to what you noted in Early May.

Welp. I was not adequately prepared for the comments prompting me to think of if I need to panic buy anything… Thanks? Idk. I hate this timeline. I know we’ll get through it, but man does it suck.

If you use daily medical supplies (I use ostomy supplies for example), check into how many you can order at a time and if you can, order the max. Covid showed me how bad supply chain issues can get. If you can’t order the max (I get it, ish is expensive AF), look into your local donation closets/centers. Knowledge is power.

I’ve just added a few staples, oatmeal, canned tuna, black beans, pasta and tomato sauce, toilet paper…- just so I could survive without having to go to the store for a couple of weeks… the pandemic taught me.

Love these Friday posts, thank you. Still digesting the mommy one from earlier this week - while I am still thinking it all through, the one thing that really blew me away was how deeply you "get" the new mommy war - despite not being a mom to anything with fewer than four legs. Which both says something about YOU as a person - and also about US as a culture.

Thank you so much, also, for lifting up the Semafor article. For the rest of the chat, if you read ONE article from start to finish this week, make it this one.

I am slowly stocking up on shelf-stable items, but I also got a deep freezer for my birthday, so I am working on filling it with complete meals that I can prep each week after I get fresh/frozen items. The trick is making sure that I'm prepping stuff my kids will actually eat (which really limits the variety of foods I'm making, lol).

We've been talking about getting a deep freezer for years... maybe now is the time to finally pull the trigger. We're lucky that when we bought this house a few years ago, it already had two working refrigerators, so we've at least got some extra freezer space already.
