I mean, yes? But, as someone who a) couldn't get a D&C right away after I had a miscarriage because the (non-Catholic) hospital where my provider had privileges didn't allow 2nd trimester procedures; b) had HELLP Syndrome during one pregnancy; c) has a daughter; d) has sisters and sisters-in-law; d) has friends capable of pregnancy; e) volunteers for an abortion fund; f) volunteered for a judicial bypass organization in a now illegal state; and g) researches abortion for my career, it's pretty far up there as like *the* main thing I care about. But I figure that so much stems from this one right that if this one is secure many other things are also safe. Also, if I'm voting between two truly pro-choice candidates (a luxury I have now in a blue state!), the other policies they support are what will guide my vote, but the abortion one is the most important.
Great article Emily! I feel like the current discourse from the right, is pushing hard to shift the Overton Window (thank you for teaching me about that one) on this issue. Diminish the value of what we think is important--the right to make decisions about our own bodies and distract from the potential domino effect on other important issues of freedom and autonomy. Then, diminish our concerns again with this mythology about innocently returning power to the states. These are the same people that used to assure us that the Supreme Court would never ever ever overturn Roe. We won't be fooled again!!
Thanks, Emily! Meghan McCain's privilege is on full display with a comment like this. If we don't have full autonomy over what's happening inside our own bodies, meaning that others have a say in what happens to us, then we have no self-determination. Also, this issue is about a lot more than simply abortion: it's about overall reproductive freedom and healthcare, not to mention the societal and economic effects that will result from half the country not having self determination.
You are spot on. As far as Ms McCain, I didn’t know anybody really listens or follows her? She’s irrelevant in a lot of people’s eyes. Plainly said, she has a bad attitude and a chip on her shoulder.
We have to be alive/healthy(ish) to care about other things 🥴
