The hard truth. We won’t see any federal action on gun violence unless we elect a Democratic president and secure a Democratic majority in both houses of Congress.
Earlier this year I introduced the idea of the “threshold voter.” The ONLY WAY we beat the gun lobby, the decades of work building a culture of gun worship on the right and the politicians who are accountable only to those voters, is for us to build a massive block of threshold voters who *deliver that message* at the polls.
This isn’t about being a single-issue voter; it’s about setting a minimum standard. If a candidate doesn’t support common-sense gun reform, they don’t get your vote—period. This isn’t radical. It’s necessary.
Gun violence is a problem, and cold hard politics is the solution. And if we don’t act strategically, we won’t see change. This isn’t being fatalistic, it’s reality. It’s the only way. With just 61 days until the next election, we’re at a critical moment, and here’s why:
We need a President who won’t undo President Biden's executive actions enhancing background checks and limiting ghost guns, who won’t limit the ATF (The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) ability to go after rogue gun sellers, who won’t sign a bill instituting nationwide reciprocal concealed carry (as Project 2025 proposes).
Bedtime stories shouldn't include 'what to do if there's a shooter.’
We need a Congress that will codify universal background checks, reinstate an assault weapons ban, require a background check completion before getting a gun, and pass gun manufacturer liability reforms so that those profiting from this crisis are held accountable. We also need a Congress that won’t defund red flag laws, gut the crime victims fund, and eliminate CDC research of gun violence (again).
If your a politician who won’t take real action to stop gun violence, then what are you waiting for? Another tragedy? Just tell us you’ve already made up your mind.
We need a Supreme Court that will uphold these laws, not overturn them at the behest of extremist groups who misinterpret the Second Amendment.
The highest court in the land should defend the Constitution, not gun manufacturers. They are choosing guns over our children, we deserve better.
Let’s be honest. We need politicians who are not owned by the gun lobby. This will only happen if we win key races in pivotal states. These are the elections that will decide whether school shootings remain a horrifying reality or become a preventable tragedy of the past.
If your version of family values includes protecting guns over kids’ lives, just be honest about it. We’re done pretending you stand for anything but your own power.
We know what needs to be done. The question is: are we willing to do it?
So, what can you do right now? Here are 5 things you can do in five minutes to help end school shootings:
