To be honest, this whole retire Biden thing is stressing me the fuck out and I’ll bet it’s stressing you out too. There seems to be a growing social pressure to have a take on every single topic. Which is impossible for both you and me.
And as someone just barely getting out from under cancer treatment, this level of stress is not good for my soul or my body.
When I get texts about this I become physically ill, truly that is not an exaggeration.
So let’s break it down and talk about ALL of the feelings involved. I want to answer every single one of you when you ask me what I think about this but I can’t do it individually…so here goes.
This is a breakup interregnum getting more press than when Ross and Rachel were on a break. My daily political reads are consumed with the question of whether the Democratic party should dump Biden in favor of another Presidential nominee.
While this whole thing went into high gear after the debate, this is not a new conversation. Ezra Klein of the New York Times has been pushing this since February. Bill Maher has been talking about this for a long time. And no just political nerds, Mr. Amal Clooney, George Clooney, waxed poetic in the Times about it.
Jessica Yellin wrote a good Substack about the options - essentially it's to elevate Kamala or let the DNC delegates choose. There are questions about whether the $91 million in the Biden-Harris campaign committee war chest could go to a candidate who is not Biden or Harris. The most likely outcome is they would transfer the money to a federal super PAC who would spend it on advertising for the new Democratic ticket.
There are a number of different opinions out there about WHY Biden should resign.
Some are fixated on the feeling of being lied to about his health and his condition.
Others are saying that he can’t win, that people feel like he is too old and they don’t support him any more.
On the flip side, the question is can an alternative win? I’ve been hearing people complain for 3 years about how ‘no one likes’ VP Harris.
Is that still true? Was it ever true? And if it was, can it be turned around quickly? (FWIW, I’ve always liked her, she was the candidate I supported in the primary!) Could one of the other candidate possibilities (Whitmer, Newsom, Buttigieg, etc) gain enough national name recognition to actually succeed in only two months?
So what do I think…should Biden resign and if so, who should take his place?
